A research team led by Prof. Piotr Targowski, PhD, DSc, from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, has received funding from the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG) programme for the implementation of the project “Polish Infrastructure for Research on Cultural Heritage – ERIHS.PL". The call supports projects included in the Polish Research Infrastructure Map.

The aim of the project is to create modern IT infrastructure and equipment facilities for physicochemical research on cultural heritage. The emerging network of laboratories and research tools will respond to the real needs of the academic community, cultural institutions, and the conservation sector – both in Poland and internationally. The infrastructure will be used, among others, in scientific projects, heritage conservation activities, and cooperation with commercial partners.

The project will be implemented by a consortium consisting of: the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences – Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (leader), AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, Jagiellonian University, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, and the University of Wrocław.

The total value of the project is PLN 37,698,110.31, of which nearly PLN 29.3 million is funding from the FENG program. The team from the Nicolaus Copernicus University, led by Prof. Piotr Targowski, received PLN 3 million, which will be allocated to expanding our university's research potential in the field of heritage sciences.

The Polish Research Infrastructure Map is an initiative of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education aimed at identifying and promoting projects of strategic importance for Polish science and with the highest research potential. Since 2020, it has included the consortium “Polish National Node of the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science – ERIHS.pl". It comprises fourteen research units, with the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń acting as its leader. Six of the institutions collaborating daily within ERIHS.pl will implement the project funded under the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG) program.
