Folk festivities
What gifts did children receive in the old days? What decorated Polish cottages instead of spruce? And why do we put hay under the tablecloth? International students of the Nicolaus Copernicus University learned the answers to these questions. They discovered the festive traditions of the Polish country life during a meeting at the Ethnographic Museum in Toruń.
The event was attended by people from various corners of the world, studying at the NCU both as part of the Erasmus+ programme and as full-time students. Thanks to the stories told by the guides, who introduced them to the festive customs of the past, the visit to the Ethnographic Museum allowed the international guests to be transported back to 19th-century Poland.
Not only did the students have the opportunity to visit the rural life museum facilities, but they also tested their practical skills in making paper decorations. The meeting was also accompanied by special treats: cereal coffee and bread with herring.
The event was organised by the Department of International Partnerships and Educational Mobility in cooperation with the Copernican Integration Centre.
