HR Excellence in Research: a decade of growth
On 26 November 2025, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń celebrates the 10th anniversary of receiving the prestigious HR Excellence in Research award. NCU was the first university in Poland to obtain this distinction, and the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on a decade of changes that have made the University an even more open, supportive, and inspiring place for researchers.
The HR Excellence in Research award honours universities that create an environment conducive to the development of attractive employment conditions and apply transparent rules for the recruitment of researchers. It is awarded by the European Commission to those institutions that implement the provisions of the European Charter for Researchers.
A Decade of Progress
Over the past years, the University has consistently improved its approach to working with its academic and research staff. Priority has been given to high ethical standards, transparency, clear employment principles, and the development of skills and competencies. Internal regulations have been updated, and new initiatives and structures have been established to support staff wellbeing, personal development, and a culture of equality and inclusivity.
NCU has also modernised its recruitment processes to ensure that every candidate has equal access to information and a fair assessment. Clear rules, transparent procedures, and support from HR specialists ensure that recruitment is open and understandable, and that the selection of the best candidates is based on their achievements and competencies.
Supportive Working and Development Conditions
The University places particular emphasis on creating a stable and comfortable working environment. New solutions strengthen the sense of security and belonging, promote well-being, and help international researchers adapt to their new surroundings. An important aspect of NCU's functioning is involving staff members in decision-making processes and in shaping the University's strategic directions. The University also strongly supports internationalisation and cooperation within European research networks.
What's more, over the past decade, NCU has developed an extensive training system for researchers at all career stages. It includes the enhancement of scientific and teaching competencies as well as the development of soft skills, leadership, and career planning. Regular evaluations and feedback help staff set further development goals, while participation in mobility programmes broadens perspectives and strengthens international cooperation.
The implementation of the HR Excellence strategy at NCU is supervised by Dr Hab. Magdalena Barwiołek, Prof. NCU, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation and Dr Hab. Adam Kola, Prof. NCU, Vice-Rector for Research. The coordination of activities is carried out by Natalia Proń-Nowak, Head of the Human Resources Department.
