Dr Piotr Pranke of the NCU Faculty of Historical Sciences has been invited to join the group of experts evaluating applications for the prestigious ERC Starting Grant 2025.

The candidate of the NCU scholar was recommended by the chairman of the expert panel, Prof László Kontler of the Central European University. Dr Piotr Pranke has been granted access to the evaluation system and has begun work on reviewing the applications that qualified for the second stage of substantive evaluation. This award is recognition of his scientific output and expert position in the international research community.

The ERC Starting Grants are prestigious research grants awarded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the Horizon Europe programme. They are aimed at outstanding early-career researchers who plan to embark on independent research and set up their own research team. The maximum amount of funding is €2.5 million.

Dr Piotr Pranke is an assistant professor employed at the NCU Faculty of Historical Sciences (Institute of History and Archival Studies), working in the Department of Scandinavian and Central and Eastern European History. His research interests are related to the functioning of the Ottonian Empire and early Piast sovereignty, and the history of Scandinavia in the Viking Age. He is a member of the EF team - Past Cultural Phenomena. He led a project of the National Programme for the Development of the Humanities and is the organiser of the international academic conference Between East and West, Millenium Regni Poloniae and a session at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds. He was a multiple scholarship holder of the NCU Rector for a stay at the Polish Historical Mission in Wurzburg, a DAAD scholarship holder, and a scholarship holder of the Minister of Science and Higher Education in the field of dissemination of science. For many years he has been involved in the popularisation of knowledge in the field of interdisciplinary medieval studies (Festival of Slavs and Vikings, PAP Science in Poland, thematic lectures, TV programmes and radio broadcasts). He managed the IDUB THUS programme and implemented a number of grants (NPRH, NCN, IDUB, Excellent Science). He is the author of four monographs, seven edited papers and dozens of scientific articles. He is a reviewer for international scientific publications.
