Joint European Degree at Nicolaus Copernicus University
What might joint degree programmes run by universities from different countries look like in practice, and what is required for their graduates to be awarded a Joint European Degree? Representatives from universities, the administration and the academic community discussed these issues on 22 September at Nicolaus Copernicus University.
The conference 'Quality Label – Joint European Degree: From Concept to Diploma: Practice, Challenges, Academic Future' was organised by the Foundation for the Development of the Education System – the National Agency for the Erasmus+ Programme and the European Solidarity Corps. The event took place at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
The Joint European Degree and the associated European Degree Label are European Commission initiatives designed to support the development of joint, international study programmes. The conference focused primarily on how to translate the principles of these initiatives into practical solutions that universities can implement.

The programme included, amongst other things, discussions on the experiences of Polish universities, the establishment and operation of international alliances, legal issues relating to joint degree programmes, and the admissions process conducted by several universities. A separate section was devoted to the degree award process, including the awarding of joint and dual degrees, the Diploma Supplement, and the criteria for awarding the Quality Mark.
The conference was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Conference of Rectors of Polish Academic Universities and Polish universities. Our university was represented by dr habil. Magdalena Barwiołek, NCU Prof. and the Vice-Rector for International Relations; staff members involved in the development of international educational cooperation also took an active part in the conference.

The event was also an opportunity to exchange experiences and draw up recommendations for the further development of international education programmes. The conference took place as part of a series of events linked to the European Universities Initiative, which has been named the European Universities Laboratory.
