The laying of the foundation stone symbolically marked the start of the construction of the NCU Collegium Medicum Centre for Dentistry. The building is to be ready in March, and scientists and students will move into the fully equipped building in October 2026.

The foundation act was signed in the presence of the Rectors of Bydgoszcz universities, members of the parliament, and authorities of Bydgoszcz and the voivodship by Prof. Andrzej Tretyn Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, Prof. Dariusz Grzanka, Vice-Rector for Collegium Medicum, Michał Sztybel, Voivode of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship, and Iwona Waszkiewicz, Deputy Mayor of Bydgoszcz.

When I took up the position of Rector, I had concerns about whether we would be able to establish a medical and dental programme, but today dentistry in Bydgoszcz is a fact, said Prof. Andrzej Tretyn during the ceremony. In a moment, the construction of a building for this programme will become a reality. I would like to thank Prof. Dariusz Grzanka, who repeatedly convinced me that the money would be found. The funds were found, as was a contractor who will complete the building at lightning speed. This shows that if you really want something, you can achieve almost anything.

The Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University thanked those involved in the creation of the new programme and the construction of the modern building, including Prof. dr. habil. Paweł Burduk, the Rector's Proxy for the Development of the Medical and Dental Programme, Prof. dr habil. Kornelia Kędziora-Kornatowska, former Vice-Rector for Collegium Medicum, Prof. dr habil. Zbigniew Włodarczyk, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Rafał Bruski, Mayor of Bydgoszcz.

Not only is an educational building being constructed here, but also a facility that will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as a dental clinic, assured Prof. Andrzej Tretyn. In this way, as a university, we will be helping not only the residents of Bydgoszcz, but also the inhabitants of the entire region.

The NCU Centre for Dentistry building will be located on the premises of Dr Jan Biziel University Hospital No. 2 in Bydgoszcz, on the side of Ujejskiego Street. It will enable the training of paediatric dentists, orthodontists, radiologists, dental surgeons, periodontists and prosthodontists, among others. It will house specialist dental clinics, including night and holiday emergency services, as well as radiological diagnostics and tomography. The facility will include teaching facilities, and an advanced Test Examination Centre is planned for the top floor. It will be designed as an open space with 142 computer stations, including two adapted for people with disabilities. This will allow examinations to be conducted in conditions of maximum standardisation and comfort.

The modern, four-storey building is being constructed on a 'design and build' basis. It will be built using modular technology, with a steel structural frame. The modules will be as large as possible and highly prefabricated, which will significantly reduce the time needed to complete the project. The scope of the contract also includes land development, including car parks, access roads, pavements, small architectural elements and the construction of the necessary technical infrastructure. The contractor for the investment is 3R Modular. The university authorities signed the contract with the construction company on 7 May this year.

Within three months, we developed the design and obtained a valid building permit, says Krzysztof Czarny from 3R Modular. Construction work has been underway for 35 days. We have two intensive weeks ahead of us to prepare the site for the assembly of the modules.

The construction cost is PLN 68.7 million. The investment will be financed from subsidies from the National Reconstruction Programme and the university's own funds. The works should be completed in March 2026. At the same time, work will be carried out to equip the teaching and clinical rooms with innovative, high-class dental equipment and devices, so that the education process adequately prepares graduates for the modern and dynamically changing technological reality in dental clinics, surgeries and prosthetic laboratories. Academic staff and students are expected to move into the new, fully equipped building in October 2026.
