NCU decade by decade
The history of the Nicolaus Copernicus University began just after the end of the Second World War. How did the university come into being and how did its structure evolve during its first decade of operation? On the occasion of the Year of Jubilees, we invite you to watch the first of a series of films presenting the history of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
The Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2025. The film 'Toruń Must Have a University - The 1945 – 1955 Decade', produced by the NCU TV, shows how the University, which initially consisted of only two faculties but is now one of the most important academic centres in Poland, was established shortly after the end of the Second World War.
The development of the NCU's organisational structure and infrastructure has been extremely dynamic. Some of the University's earliest units, such as the Academic Choir, the Academic Sports Union, the NCU Archives, the Sports Centre, and the Foreign Languages Centre , have existed and are still an important parts of the University's life today.
The material also shows important people associated with the University. Among the NCU's first alumni were prominent representatives of various fields, such as Zbigniew Herbert, a poet and philosopher who graduated in law, and Cecylia Iwaniszewska, the first astronomy graduate.
