Scientific summer in Toruń

Sixteen international students are hosted at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń as part of the international internship program Toruń Student Summer Program in Exact Sciences. This year's TSSP ExSci Summer School was organised for the seventh time.

The Toruń Student Summer Program in Exact Sciences is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Informatics and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The summer school is a four-week program during which international students have the opportunity to engage in a scientific research project. The project is carried out as part of the Excellence Initiative - Research University framework.

This year, people from Tunisia, Turkey, Croatia, the USA, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Ukraine, Latvia, Greece, Germany and Spain have come to Toruń. Under the supervision of researchers from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Informatics and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, young scientists are carrying out projects involving research in physics, mathematics, automation, robotics and computer science. Most of the international guests will stay in the city of Copernicus until the end of July, and the last participant will complete the project in mid-August.

In addition to working on projects, the interns had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with research conducted at both faculties. Special lectures in English were given by dr habil. Karolina Mikulska-Rumińska, NCU Prof., who talked about molecular dynamics simulations, and dr Aurelia Dymek, whose talk was on prime numbers and dynamical systems. The participants also learned about the study of thermoelectric phenomena thanks to a lecture by dr habil. Michał Pawlak, NCU Prof. and the application of fixed point theory to the description of neural networks, which was presented by dr Krzysztof Rykaczewski.

Students have also had the opportunity to discover Toruń's charms through a number of accompanying events. They visited Toruń's museums, learnt about the history of the Old Town, watched a screening at the Planetarium and took a boat trip on the Vistula.
