We Now Know the Results of the Evaluation
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has published the results of the evaluation of research activity for the years 2022–2025. Of the 30 disciplines assessed at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, as many as five were awarded an A+ rating, which is the third-highest result among Polish universities.
The evaluation is carried out every four years in accordance with the Act on Higher Education and Science, which came into force on 1 October 2018. It covers universities, institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences and international research institutes employing at least 12 research staff in a given discipline. The assessment is based on the individual achievements of staff, and results in the discipline being awarded a scientific category of A+, A, B+, B or C, which determines the institution's eligibility to run degree programmes and doctoral schools, award degrees and titles, as well as the amount of subsidy the research unit receives from the budget
Of the 47 academic and artistic disciplines covered by the Polish system at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, 30 were subject to evaluation.
As a result of the evaluation, five disciplines pursued at the Nicolaus Copernicus University were awarded the highest scientific category, A+. Only two other universities can boast a better result in this respect: the University of Warsaw (9 disciplines with category A+) and Jagiellonian University (6 disciplines with category A+). Our University is the only higher education institution in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship to have been awarded an A+ rating. Thirteen academic disciplines received an A rating.

The evaluation was carried out on the basis of three criteria:
The academic or artistic standard of the research carried out – assessed on the basis of academic articles, monographs, the editing of monographs and the authorship of chapters in monographs, as well as patents granted for inventions.
The financial impact of research and development – assessed on the basis of the amount of funding secured for research projects through calls for proposals organised by EU institutions, foreign institutions, the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), the National Science Centre (NCN) and the National Programme for Research and Higher Education (NPRH). This criterion also takes into account the commercialisation of research or development outcomes, as well as research carried out on behalf of entities outside the higher education and science sectors.
The impact of scientific activity on the functioning of society and the economy – assessed on the basis of descriptions demonstrating the link between research and the functioning of public administration, healthcare, culture, etc. This criterion also takes into account the so-called case studies, which allow for a reliable measurement and assessment of the impact.
As part of the evaluation for the years 2022–2025, a total of 1,241 administrative decisions were issued concerning research categories at 280 institutions. Category A+ was awarded 106 times, and category A 392 times. The most frequently awarded category is B+ (607 decisions). The next most common category is B, with 120 decisions, followed by category C with 16.
