Does international law compel corporations to abide by human rights?
NCU Human Rights Department is pleased to announce a third guest lecture of our Lecture series „Contemporary issues of human rights theory and practice. Global, regional and national perspectives”. The Lecture series is organized in association with AHRI. It will be the last lecture in this academic year.
Anikó Szalai (Faculty of Law, University of Szeged, Hungary) will be presenting a topic "Does international law compel corporations to abide by human rights?” 10 June 2021 (Thursday) at 5 PM CET.
Primarily international human rights conventions oblige states, but with the emergence of bigger and bigger multinational companies the different actors of the field started to pose the question: how can global companies be held responsible for human rights violations occurring in their units or affiliates anywhere on Earth. Do multinational companies have responsibility based on international law? Can the UN regulate the actions of multinational companies?

Anikó Szalai graduated as a lawyer in 2005 at the Faculty of Law, University of Szeged (Hungary). At the same institution, she was a PhD student on state scholarship between 2005 and 2008, then assistant lecturer until 2012. She defended her PhD thesis in 2012 and became a senior lecturer. In 2019 she received habilitation, based on publications related to the law of treaties and minority protection, and has become associate professor. Since March 2021 she is the director of the International and Regional Studies Institute of the University of Szeged, Faculty of Law. She is a lecturer at the human rights and international humanitarian law master program of the Europa Universitaet Viadrina (Frankfurt Oder, Germany), she regularly lectures abroad. Her areas of lecture and research are public international law, human rights, minority law, and international organizations.
She has been the member of numerous professional bodies, among others, she is the secretary of the Public International Law Sub-committee of the Legal Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, member of the Presidency of the Hungarian United Nations Association, member of the Board of Directors of the European Public Law Organization, member of the Board of Editors of the Central- and Eastern European Legal Studies, a founder of the Regional Academy on the United Nations.
YUFE Day at the NCU
Discussions on the role, impact and future of the YUFE and briefings on education, science and management and relations in the context of the Nicolaus Copernicus University's presence in the alliance will fill the YUFE Open Day, which will be held in an online format on 15th June.
The main objective of the event is to acquaint the NCU community with the progress of the work carried out within YUFE, as well as to indicate how the tasks carried out by our University in the alliance coincide with the vision of the University, as defined in the Strategy just consulted.
The Nicolaus Copernicus University as a partner university of the YUFE is at the halfway point of the three-year project, which will formally end in December 2022. The further fate of the European Universities Initiative will crucially depend on the evaluation of the effects of the pilot projects. It is worth noting that the YUFE has repeatedly been indicated as one of the model alliances and it may be assumed that the chances for the development and co-financing of this European University model are high.

Webinar: Systematic Literature Searching
The Cross-National Perspective on Social Work Research Group is pleased to invite you to the Webinar "Systematic Literature Searching", which will be held online via Zoom, on 22nd June, 2021 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am (Central European Time). This webinar is organized in collaboration with the Institute of Education, Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń.
Systematic literature searching as part of systematic literature review is relevant for a wide variety of scientific disciplines. In this webinar, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the principles and best practices of systematic literature searching as well as engage in a practice session with the presenter, Prof. Brian Taylor of Ulster University, United Kingdom.
The webinar will be structured into two sessions:
- 1st Session - presentation of the principles of systematic literature search (10:00 am – 10:35 am CEST)
- 15 mins break (10:35 am – 10:50 am CEST)
- 2nd Session - interactive practice of systematic literature search in selected databases (10:50 am – 11:30 am CEST).
The webinar is free of charge. To obtain one of the limited available spots, please complete and submit the online form not later than 20th of June, 2021. A confirmation email with login details will be sent to you before the day of the webinar.

THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
The Cross-National Perspective on Social Work Research Group comprises PhD students from around the world who meet to exchange ideas and share their experiences in the area of social work research. The group plans to organize periodic webinars with renowned research scientists and practitioners to popularize current findings in social work and other related disciplines.
