Is there a Jewish Nature?
Faculty of History invites you to a lecture by Dr. Emma Zohar, which will take place on March 21 at 17:00 online on the Big Blue Button platform. The meeting will be conducted in English.
The image of Jewish life in Poland cannot be farther away from nature, agriculture, and gardening. This well-rooted image has several reasons: the common occupations of Jews in trade and finance; the restrictions on owning land and farms in Tsarist Russia; and the urbanization processes among East European Jewry. Furthermore, it was encouraged by the Zionism that wishes to define the “new world” from the “old world” by rising the approach of Halutzim and Geulat HaAretz. But, a close look on primary sources reviles that polish Jewry very much appreciated nature, if by the growing number of Jews that practiced hiking in the forests and mountains, enjoyed ski or went to soak the sun at the seaside or in holiday retreats.
The lecture will take place on March 21st at 5 pm, online via BigBlueButton: https://vc.umk.pl/b/krz-mme-u72-af3. The speech will be given in English, recorded, and then posted online.
